Julia Calabrese

Julia Calabrese (she/her) is a multidisciplinary artist who uses video and performance to create her visual language. Calabrese combines elements of dance and theater, set and costume design, and community engagement to make site-specific artworks. She inhabits natural landscapes or constructs immersive environments to explore themes of human frailty and failure, joy, and the absurd. Her work focuses on the human body and imaginative possibilities held within, unexpected settings and unfamiliar situations.

Recently, Calabrese has focused on increasing her skills in costume fabrication, special FX makeup, and prosthetics.  She is currently collaborating with filmmaker Leah Brown to develop a fantasy/horror short film centered around an original creature design.

Calabrese grew up in Fairfax, Virginia, and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University in 2007. She lives and works in Portland, OR.
